I am happy that you did! This is one my favorite illuminations in the books. I purposely did not add my name in copyright to the metadata to avoid confusion so it went on my blog as a public domain image. I love that image of the page with gilding going from Latin into Greek? letters. Wow.

Randy, thanks for this commentary on the exhibit. I really want to get over there to see it. I went to the one in Phoenix (a day trip for me) and spent five hours going back and forth between pages. Completely mesmerized! I bet you saw that exhibit also. Is this latest one any different in content? A day trip to New Mexico is a bit more of a challenge so I want to know I'll see more. (Not that I couldn't find lots else to do and stay longer!!) I would have loved to see you demonstrate the work. Too bad it was cancelled. Happy holidays, my friend. Nice review of this exhibit, Randy. Sorry you didn't get to demo calligraphy but you are lucky you get to see this exhibit. Great to see all the pictures too (including the one I took of Suzanne' image from Sirach, thought I recognized that picnic table background ;-)

I am preparing to teach a class in layout and design for our calligraphy guild in September. (Utah) I was awake last night stressing over it all. I thought I would surf the web for inspiration and found your delightful blog/s. There will be different skill levels at the meeting. I can't decide on an approach. We are working with Uncial this year. Loving your journal pages.

Hi Jessie... Thank you for your kind comments. The answer is that I paint from photographs or a combination of photographs... I will usually take quite a lot of time on a portrait, usually 3 to 5 days on the face itself.

I just love these pages...so free and spontaneous and mysterious. You have shown how beautiful and accessible abstract calligraphy can be. Yours was one of the few galleries I wanted to see during a recent visit to Santa Fe and I was so sorry to miss you. I look forward to anything new you post and hope all is well.

Oh, my goodness, Randall, these are just incredible. Thank you for going to the trouble of photographing and posting these for us--We, who love, love, love the beauty of the calligraphed letter and word but who will probably never come close to anything this beautiful. But the dream is still alive!

Love the quote also--it inspires me for my work today on the heart ball canvas.

I am so enthused about your work. I have been painting a little, but I really desire to give some sort of encouragement to others. Someone may be going through a lonely time, and because of hurts or deep wounds of some kind, truths can turn twisted and muddied into ugly distortions. False perceptions are the only awareness.
Your artwork and wonderful caligraphy opens new avenues of encouragement, color, and purposefulness which brings HOPE. Thoughts that are bleak, gray and hopeless turn into colorful possibilities and new adventures to explore. Usually when there is some deep sadness or awareness of my shortcomings and failures, I am driven to God's scriptures. If I seek and pray choosing to look up at Him, instead of looking down, light begins to filter in through the murkiness, and somehow hope takes root and grows. God's Grace, (He is so patient!) and the knowledge that He Loves me lifts me up and out of the pit. Hope's So lovely. It breaths life into my soul, and I pray God to use me, make me 100 percent his follower in time it will be Him living through me. Love will come without effort, forgiveness will be as natural as breathing. For now, I thank Him for what He did for us. He can breathe life back in where there was none. Look up at Him. Continuing in the light of His Word. He begins to show me he has purpose in store for me. Well, I had wanted for years to learn calligraphy and paint. The purpose was to give enlightenment any one who needed encouragement. Breathe a prayer onto the canvas for whomever needed it. I believe in prayer and art can move a soul to encouragement, as you have done. Thank you
I hope God will have me become an artist who will paint for Him, and be used by Him to encourage others also.
